Iraq Civil War
Which side will the United States be on?
by Lynn Wilkerson
Dec. 12: Iran which is mostly Shia, is the main
financial supporter of the Hezbollah. “Iranian President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad on Tuesday told delegates at an international conference
questioning the Holocaust that Israel's days were numbered.” Iran under
Ahmadinejad is continuing to pursue nuclear weapons and no one in their
right mind thinks he wants them just for self defense. On the other hand
there is the Sunni Bath party in Iraq which elected Saddam Hussein as
their leader. Al qaeda are mostly Sunnis from Arabia, Egypt and the
Emirates. And move freely in Sunni communities. Although Al qaeda is a
frightening name to Americans at this time, it is of much less interest
to the people of the middle east. “Saudi Arabia would respond to an
American withdrawal from Iraq by funding and arming Sunni insurgents to
prevent them being massacred by Shia militias, the kingdom has told the
White House.” It was recently reported that Saddam’s generals reported
that Saddam was arming the Sunni civilians just before the war not to
just fight the invading American army but to over come and protect the
party lines from the Shia’s that would surly rise up after the conflict.
In a Iraq civil war I would of bet on the Sunnis because they had
political and military experience, even though they are out numbered.
But Iran is supporting the Shia and al-Sadr with arms. “The Iraq Study
Group's grim report embraces the most worrisome estimates about Muqtada
al-Sadr's private army: He has up to 60,000 fighters, and his followers
are planted throughout the security forces protecting the Health
Ministry and other Iraqi government institutions.” It should be evident
by now and was well understood by Iraq academia that the Sunnis and
Shias would now compromise in a Democracy. If the conflict continues to
worsen, which everyone believes it will. I believe the best move we
could make is to give Saddam back his country, rearm and rebuild the
Sunni army under Saddam and with the support of the Saudis subdue the
Shia militias and balance the power in the middle east. The worst case
scenario would be if the Shia won Iraq. With a power base in Iran the
world, especially the west, would be in a world of hurt. Which side
would you be on?
Dec 19, 2006 WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Shiite Muslim cleric
Muqtada al-Sadr's Mehdi Army has replaced al Qaeda in Iraq as "the most
dangerous accelerant" of the sectarian violence plaguing Iraq for nearly
a year, according to a Pentagon report. Attacks by Iraqi insurgents and
sectarian militias jumped 22 percent from mid-August to mid-November,
and Iraqi civilians suffered the bulk of casualties, according to the
quarterly report released on Monday.
